On July 10th Ontario Environment Minister John Gerretsen approved the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Program Plan, developed by Ontario Electronics Stewardship (OES), the responsible Industry Funding Organization. OES Press Release & Backgrounder also available.

The final Ontario Electronics Stewardship (OES) program plan and associated documents have now been posted on the Environmental Registry for a 30-day public review and comment period. All comments received prior to May 9, 2008 will be considered as part of the decision-making process by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment if they are submitted in writing or electronically using the form provided and referencing EBR Registry number 010-3125.

Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES) invites Stewards and Stakeholders to comment on the draft preliminary WEEE Diversion Program Plan which is now available for review on the OES website. Comments on this draft plan are due by end of day February 4th, 2008.
Industry-led electronics recycling now on both coasts! On February 1st, the ACES program got off to a good start with an event in Greenwood, Nova Scotia which Environment Minister Mark Parent attended (see press release here).
On February 1, 2008 Saskatchewan's SWEEP program celebrated its One Year Anniversary. As well, SWEEP expanded its communication scope and ran two radio ads in the month of January. You can review them here and here.
OES Workshop #3: OES will hold the third consultation workshop and webcast on the development of the WEEE Diversion Program Plan on Thursday January 24th, 2008 at 10:30am in Toronto. This workshop is important for brand owners, assemblers of non-branded equipment or first importers of designated electronic products. Nova Scotia electronics regulation to take effect February 2008: In response to the province's electronics recycling regulation, Atlantic Canada Electronics Stewardship (ACES), a Nova Scotia-based, not-for-profit has been formed to implement an industry-led, harmonized, end-of-life recycling program for obligated electronics (computers, printers and televisions in 2008, cell phones and selected other products by 2009). More information available at www.acestewardship.ca.
The BC Environment Ministry issued a press release to applaud the success of the industry-led electronics stewardship program there. In just the first three months of operation, ESABC's "Return-It Electronics" program diverted more than 1.8 million kilograms of electronic waste from landfill and potential illegal export. This means approximately 10,000 televisions, 60,000 computer monitors, 20,000 CPUs and 30,000 printers are now being responsibly recycled.

EPSC, along with the Retail Council of Canada, have submitted a final plan to Nova Scotia Minister Mark Parent for the development of an electronics stewardship program in the province by February 2008
The Resource Recovery Fund Board (RRFB), the local delivery partner developing an industry-led stewardship program for end-of-life electronics in Nova Scotia, is seeking the public's input on a draft stewardship plan. Businesses, municipalities, schools, community groups, and individual Nova Scotians are invited to visit RRFB Nova Scotia's website at www.rrfb.com to read the plan and complete a short survey before July 25, 2007.
EPSC has issued an RFP for program plan development in anticipation of an electronics stewardship program for Ontario. Closing date for bid submissions is July 16, 2007
On June 12, 2007, the Ontario Environment Minister issued a Final Program Request Letter to Waste Diversion Ontario for selected end-of-life electronics. In the letter, Minister Broten requested an industry-led electronics recycling program plan to be delivered by February 1, 2008. Press release can be found here.

On May 3rd CARI will host Canada's first Electronics Recycling Workshop in Barrie, Ontario. EPSC will speak on the Recycling Vendor Qualification Program (RVQP) which is being used to audit electronics recyclers in regulated programs across Canada, including ARMA, SWEEP and ESABC.

EPSC has released a request for expression of interest for individuals or organizations interested in providing program development and management services in support of an industry led electronics end of life stewardship program in the province of Nova Scotia. This request for expression of interest will be used to create a bidders list for a request for proposal (RFP) process. Responses are due by March 7, 2007. No extensions will be provided.
On February 23, 2007 Nova Scotia's Minister of the Environment announced the province had enacted regulations for End-of-Life Electronics. The Electronic Product Stewardship Regulations require an industry-led approach, and will come into effect on February 1, 2008 for the first phase of products (computers, printers, monitors and TVs) and February 1, 2009 for the second phase (scanners, fax machines, cell phones, telephones). On December 18, 2006 EPSC received approval from BC Ministry of the Environment for the Product Stewardship plan. A new, locally-based not-for-profit, Electronics Stewardship BC, will be launching an industry-led program June 1st across the province.
Electronics Stewardship Association of B.C. (ESBC) is seeking expressions of interest from recyclers of end-of-life televisions, computers, computer monitors and desktop printers. The request for EOIs can be found here.
Saskatchewan Waste Electronic Equipment Program SWEEP) has issued an RFP for the recycling of electronic display devices (monitors, televisions) for the end-of-life electronics stewardship program in the province. Public consultations in BC have wrapped up, and as of October 15th the final stewardship plan for end-of-life electronics in British Columbia has been submitted to the province for review and approval.
A draft stewardship plan (appendices) for public consultation has been released by British Columbia Electronics Stewardship (BCES). Written comments will be accepted up to September 29, 2006. In addition, during the week of September 11th there will be a series of in-person consultation sessions across BC (registration). For more information contact doug@encorpinc.com.

BC Environment Minister Barry Penner has released an intentions paper on the regulation of end-of-life electronics and the requirement for an industry-led stewardship approach - deadline for comments is November 15th.
The province of Saskatchewan has passed a regulation requesting an industry-led product stewardship approach for end-of-life electronics. EPSC has begun work on this approach by launching an advisory panel, and have issued a bidder's request document for the management and administrative services for the proposed program.

EPS Canada releases it's first Annual Review, focusing on themes of consultation, communication and commitment. The review also outlines the challenges which lie ahead for electronics stewardship in Canada.
On May 6, 2004 the Province of Alberta announced the details of their Electronics Recycling Program, becoming the first jurisdiction in Canada to announce a regulated electronics end-of-life management program. The related regulation has now also been issued.

Saskatchewan announces public consultations on approaches to effective e-waste management, and identifies EPS Canada as key partner (see Press Release & Fact Sheet)
The Province of Alberta has released the results of a series of e-waste consultations they held in late 2003. Over 300 stakeholders participated in six workshops, or via on-line surveys, and strongly supported establishing an e-waste management program, funded via an environmental handling fee. The release and other results available on-line here.
At the CCME meeting of November 25th in Victoria, Environment Ministers from across Canada agreed to develop Canada-wide principles for dealing with waste from electronic products, building on the principles currently being developed by the western provinces.

EPS Canada hosted a first ever national e-waste "Town Hall" in Toronto on November 14, 2003. This by-invitation-only event with provinces, territories, EPS member companies and other key stakeholders was success, with over 80 participants attending.
